报告简介:

Social norms are essential to human societies but may vary across cultures. The current research showed that residential mobility play a role on judgment of social norm violations. Study 1a and study 1b found that high (vs. low) residential mobility enhanced tolerance to weakly social norm-violating behaviors only in females. Judgment of strongly social norm-violating and moral norm-violating behaviors did not differ between two levels of residential mobility (high vs. low) in both genders. In study 2, we further explored the neural mechanism underlying the difference in judgment of social norm violations across mobility conditions in females using electroencephalography. The results replicated findings in study 1a, that differential N400 for contrast between weak social norm violations and appropriate behavior was more negative in low (vs. high) residential mobility condition. Study 3 revealed that residential mobility influenced neural response to nonsocial violations in an opposite pattern. Semantically incorrect sentences evoked more negative going N400 in high (vs. low) residential mobility condition. Together, our findings suggest residential mobility has a specific influence on individuals’ judgment on social norm violations and a different pattern of influence on nonsocial violations.

报告简介:

Mathematics is at the pinnacle of uniquely human cognitive achievement. The capacity for mathematics, however, has been hypothesized to emerge, at least in part, from more primitive, non-verbal numerical abilities. My research investigates the nature of these non-verbal numerical abilities in infants and preschool children and their relationship to symbolic number and mathematics development. Using behavioral and brain (ERP) measures, my studies show that even young infants are able to compare, match, and perform basic arithmetic over numerosities using their non-verbal numerical systems. My work also shows that these non-verbal numerical abilities contribute to the learning of symbolic numbers (e.g., counting) in preschool aged children. This body of research shows that non-verbal numerical abilities are presented since early in life and lay the cognitive foundations for formal mathematics learning. This work also suggests ways in which educators may take advantage of non-verbal numerical intuitions to better teach mathematics to children.
