题目：Attentional Modulation of Ensemble Coding for Dynamic Faces’ Identities

报告简介：

    Observers could accurately compute the summary statistic from a set of similar objects, which was referred to as ensemble coding. Present study focused on the mandatory issue (i.e., irrelevant items cannot be excluded from the averaging process by attention) of the ensemble coding for dynamic faces with a revised paradigm of the Multiple Object Tracking task. Observers first viewed multiple moving target faces and then were asked to indicate whether a subsequent test face was one of preceding targets. After establishing that ensemble coding could occur for dynamic faces, we found that observers were more likely to judge the average of tracked target faces to have been presented than the average of all faces in the display (whole-set average face), which was more than new average faces. These findings suggest that the ensemble coding for facial identities is not mandatory and can be modulated by attention, at least, partially. Our results also suggest that observers simultaneously form the exemplar and the set average representations. These results are consistent with the suggestion that humans represent the visual stimuli hierarchically.
