The space around us could be divided into peripersonal space (near space, the space within the reach of an arm) and extrapersonal space (far space, the space beyond the reach of an individual). The present study examined whether the social distance influences the transition from near (or peripersonal) space to far space. In Experiment 1A, participants were required to bisect a line (10 cm or 40 cm) in near space alone or with another person of different gender who sat opposite to actual participants. A contraction of near space was observed, because participants showed a rightward bias to the real midpoint of the line at 40 cm in the two-persons condition, but not in the single-person condition. However, such an effect disappeared in Experiment 1B when the gender of two persons was the same in the two-persons condition. Experiment 1C further manipulated the ingroup versus outgroup status between participants and another person. A reduce of near space was observed for the outgroup condition. The results support that near becomes far only under the presence of an outgroup member but not an ingroup member. Such a modulation of near/far perception of distance was further investigated in Experiment 2. In a greyscales task, the perception of distance was modulated by the perceived crowdedness. In Experiment 3, we investigated whether social behavior (competition and cooperation) modulated the perception of space. The results showed that the boundary of near space could be extended in the cooperation context compared with competition context. Our results provide evidence that the boundary of near space is shaped by social information.
