报告简介：

This talk will cover my recent work considering the role of dialecticism, a constellation of lay beliefs that people perceive the world is full of constant changes and contradictions, in people’s response to environmental challenges, such as global warming. Four studies will be discussed. Study 1 found that people primed with a dialectical mindset were more likely to perceive that global warming will slow down as compared with people primed with a non-dialectical mindset. We measured participants’ dialectical scores in Studies 2 – 4. We found a significant negative influence of dialectical mindset on overall pro-environmental behaviors among Chinese participants in Study 2 and on pro-environmental product choice among American participants in Study 3. Finally, we found that raising people’s environmental concerns could eliminate the negative influence of dialectical mindset on pro-environmental behaviors. These findings converge to support a powerful role of cultural values in shaping people’s responses to contemporary environmental challenges.
