报告简介:

Language learning is accompanied by structural and functional changes in the brain. Increased neural specialization is one of the most important functional changes that happen in the brain during language learning. Neural specialization refers to the fact that a brain region is only responsive to a certain type of stimuli and calculations. In this talk, I will present evidence to support the argument that increased neural specialization is associated with increased language proficiency. First, the cross-linguistic divergence in the brain increases from children to adults, suggesting that the brain adapts to ones language with experience. Second, developmental dyslexia as an extreme example of low language proficiency is associated with reduced neural specialization. Third, neural specialization is also demonstrated in second language acquisition. For example, English-speaking adults show different brain activation patterns when learning different second languages. Last, optimal language learning method facilitates the process of neural specialization, which has important implications for language interventions.
